Thanks to the joint effort between the business sector, the community and the close cooperation with federal authorities, Litibú could be one of the first places in Mexico to be certified as a Sustainable Destination.

This is the Declaratoria de Zona de Desarrollo Turístico Sustentable (Declaration of Sustainable Tourism Development Zone), a new recognition that during this year will issue its first edition.

The specific aspect that motivated this application was the spectacular renovation that Litibú underwent, since a strong investment was made to remodel what is now known as Higuera Golf Club. In addition, environmental practices, flora and fauna protection, and the involvement of tourism and the community in ecological awareness efforts were continued and improved.

This first certificate will be granted by the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) as well as by the Secretaría de Gobernación and the Secretaría de Turismo.

As a definition, the Declaratoria de Zona de Desarrollo Turístico Sustentable will be given only to destinations that, due to their natural and cultural features, are a tourist attraction and may be decreed for their current and/or potential development.

If this certification is granted to Litibú, it would make the efforts of Banderas Bay north area an outstanding and transcendent case study in conservation and progress.
