As 2024 began, the Vallarta Real Estate Guide editorial team reached out to Debra Stevenson, president of CRATE Interiors, a prominent interior design studio based in our Mexican paradise, to learn about some of the decor trends that will be seen in various condominiums in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit this year.

THE ESSENCE OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Debra Stevenson began by offering her vision of interior design: “More than a visually appealing space, it’s about creating environments that transform the lives of the owners or those who will inhabit the place. This philosophy must prevail in every project, as the goal is to offer an environment that resonates in harmony with the essence of beach life.”

The styles, colors, shapes, and designs that will be seen in condominiums in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit this year.

BUDGET AND DECORATING PLAN: KEY ELEMENTS

According to our expert, embarking on an interior design journey in Puerto Vallarta and/or Riviera Nayarit requires the careful consideration of two key elements: defining a budget and executing a decorating plan. “These factors become the basis for decision-making, ensuring success in creating a new home in this corner of the Mexican Pacific,” she adds.

TROPICAL COLOR PALETTES AND TEXTURES

Due to the natural benefits that Puerto Vallarta, “resort style” is a predominant interior design preference. “This style highlights coastal color palettes, as well as tropical and textured elements of decor.”

TRENDING ELEMENTS AND MATERIALS

The president of CRATE Interiors shares that recent global design fairs have seen a trend towards soft, ergonomic silhouettes and comfortable textures, including bouclé fabric. “Organic art sculptural objects with handmade details complement the creation of personal spaces that are comfortable.”

THE VALUE OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE “Professional interior design services are invaluable in nature. With unexpected costs and considerations throughout the process, an experienced designer can anticipate and mitigate issues, which will result in saving time and money.” —Debra Stevenson.

DESIGN FOR CLIMATE

Considering Puerto Vallarta’s climate, where humidity can pose challenges, Debra Stevenson notes: “In conjunction with the client, we select furniture specifically designed for tropical climates, with durable and washable fabrics, as well as sturdy woods. Even the art murals we design resist moisture better than typical wallpapers.”

TIMING AND FREQUENCY OF RENEWALS

“According to our industry standards, the ideal time to renovate an apartment’s interior spaces is approximately every 10 years, taking into account general wear and tear and changes in design trends. Here in Puerto Vallarta, the summer season generally sees an avalanche of renovations and upgrades, as everyone wants to be ready and/or have their property in top condition for the winter season.”

THE SECRET OF BALANCE

“Coco Chanel famously said: ‘Get fully dressed, then look in the mirror and take one thing off.’ In this way, as a design team, we advocate for strong and harmonious spaces that have a distinctive decor style but are not cluttered. It is important to leaving room for residents to add their personal touches to create a balanced and welcoming space.”

TRENDS FOR 2024

Looking ahead to 2024, our expert believes that kitchens will be the spaces where owners will invest in the most significant transformations: “Kitchens are experiencing a great time, with new materials are available, as well as exciting color choices and technical innovations, to make this important room more functional and intuitive. Hidden storage, pull-out drawers, high-quality appliances and chef-quality cookware are in high demand today.”
