Having covered how trends are created and the prevalent design styles found in Vallarta · Nayarit, this second and final part of this special article will address color, material, and furniture trends for 2023, as well as other design tips shared by Sheryl Novak, owner of SOLutions Mexico, a renowned furniture and decor showroom based in Bucerías, Nayarit.

COLOR IN 2023

In December 2022, Pantone named Viva Magenta or 18-1750 as the trendiest color for 2023.  Novak explains, “It’s a very vivid pink that reflects the idea of coming out of a very dark period—this one being the COVID 19 lockdown which had many challenges. Now we want colors that offer us vitality.”

In addition, our expert points out that in Vallarta · Nayarit, we will see other Mexican colors in design. “From a central piece, like a wall, you can use bougainvillea inspired colors, which are pink, orange, yellow and green.”

On the other hand, she points out that in her opinion, pastel colors will gradually become less popular, since they are more passive shades and do not combine as well with vibrant tones.

MATERIALS

With regard to the materials used for furniture, Novak points out that now, with a view towards sustainability and creating durable furniture that will stand the test of time, furnishings made with engineered wood—a type of compressed wood that has a lifespan of at least 30 years—will become more popular.

FURNITURE

The owner of SOLutions Mexico shares: “There is a big difference between what Mexicans, Canadians and Americans are looking for. Mexicans tend to gather around food, so they look for a large kitchen and dining room with plenty of chairs to sit on; whereas Americans and Canadians gather around the TV, so they need a large, very comfortable sofa. From my point of view, this is a feature that bay developers should take into account when building.”

Also, our expert points out that space-saving furniture will continue to trend for several more years, as new construction condominiums often offer smaller floor plans.

WHEN TO START YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN

“It is very common for people to wait to begin the interior design stage until they take possession of their unit. However, I believe that the ideal window to start is about three months before the condo is delivered. The reason behind this is that, during that time, you can visit stores calmly or check online catalogs and make correct decisions for your home, considering the factors we have mentioned.”

BUDGET TO FURNISH A PROPERTY

When asked how much should be budgeted to furnish a new condo in Vallarta · Nayarit, Novak shared, “That is one of the questions I get asked the most. Based on my experience of more than 15 years, I can say that for a two-bedroom unit with two bathrooms, you should invest between 20,000 to 25,000 USD, not including blinds or appliances. In addition, you have to factor in the 16 percent tax and add shipping costs—which are often not included in the price. Obviously, you can pay more or less, it all depends on the client. Another rule of thumb is to allocate 10 percent of what you paid for the condo. So, either option can work as an optimal reference price.”

IDEAL TIME TO CHANGE YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN

Before ending our conversation, the owner of SOLutions Mexico commented that, although interior design is performed to last over time, it can always be changed at the moment when the residents themselves no longer feel totally comfortable in their home. “Often it happens that a wall was painted a certain color, and, with the passage of time, it turns out that detail is no longer working in the space. That is the right time to change your style, because the idea is for you to feel completely comfortable in your home.”
